Installing software with apt-get

More information about commands may be found in the System Administration chapter commands section. You should be logged in to the administrator account to enter any commands which begin with sudo. The sudo command allows the user to enter one command at a time as super user.

apt-get is a command line utility for downloading software. Any of the software apps that may be downloaded via the Synaptic Package Manager may also be downloaded using apt-get. Just login to the system administrator account and open a command window. Enter sudo apt-get install figlet (for example) at the command prompt (you will be prompted to enter the system administrator password) and the figlet app will be installed. To learn more about figlet, enter man figlet at the command prompt.

Using apt-get may be a lot faster than using the GUI tools to download software if you already know the name of the software package that you want to install.
